U.S. Department of Energy said recently filling the nation’s strategic petroleum reserve will require $20 billion and several years to complete. Chris Wright, energy secretary in the administration of new president Donald Trump, said March 7 he will seek $20 billion to restore holdings “close to the top.” The SPR, world’s largest emergency crude oil stockpile with capacity to store 727 million barrels, now holds about 395 million barrels.
In 2024 Saputra-Patzek, etal with the University of Texas School of Petroleum Engineeing wrote a paper published in the Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin suggesting the Marcellus formation in the Appalachain Basin has 100 TCF of recoverable, profitable natural gas left in its limited core areas, providing 15,000 more wells could be drilled in it over and above the 13,000 that already exist. That is less than 3 years of production to total U.S. natural gas consumption.
