Lots of folks blamed the recession in 2007/2008 on this exact metric. I know many folks around Houston driving from the 'burbs each day were hurt.
A key point Luke Gromen makes here can't be overemphasized - a revaluation of the economy once it finally sinks in that energy is going to cost more in the future is coming. I was in Plano last week, and can easily see that people who have to drive can have 1 hour commutes, like we do in Houston. A lot of these housing developments have been built on $2.50-$3.00 gasoline. We use oil based products for mobility because they are the cheapest. We go up from here. It's hard to see any government withstand the pressure if oil prices go up to actually cover full cost to find and produce the next barrel. Trump is handling it the same way as last time - more OPEC supply. But once it's clear that US shale oil production is slowing we'll see how much they help.
